MODESTO, CA - Call them the come-back kids because the Turlock Academica Jrs 2008 Boys refused to be denied a State Cup Championship on Sunday afternoon at Mary Grogan Community Park.
The team went down early in the match 1-0 to Walnut Creek. However Aaron Garcia evened the contest four minutes later with a blast from 25 yards. Five minutes into the second half Turlock was once again behind. Just like in the first half it didn't take the team long to rebound when Kurtis Silveira whipped a cross into the mix that Ricardo Lacerda Jr. put into the back of the net to tie the match 2-2.
Regulation came to a close with the game still even and overtime did not result in either team scoring which meant the championship would be decided in penalty kicks.
David Hernandez saved Walnut Creek's third penalty attempt while Xavier Cisneros, Mario Chavez, and Diego Ochoa each converted for Turlock. The match came down to the fifth kick. Turlock's Mateo d'Escoto sealed the victory with his attempt.
This is the third State Cup Championship this season with the 06B and 09G winning trophies earlier in the year.
"We are extremely proud of the boys and the coaching staff," said Director of Coaching Gabriel Bolton. "Winning a championship is always a special accomplishment. Coach Barajas is fantastic coach who knows how to develop talent at the highest level. All anyone has to do is look at his 03 NPL squad to know that if the boys on the 08 team keep working hard and trust in the process their future is very bright."
